Standard Five: Classroom Motivation and Management Skills - The teacher understands individual and group motivation and behavior and creates a learning environment that encourages positive social interaction, active engagement in learning, and self-motivation.
Standard five, classroom motivation and management skills, are done on a daily basis in the classroom. Teachers must be able to not only motivate students learning, but also be able to have classroom management skills that keep the students on task and focused. Teacher are not the only ones who have to create classroom motivation, the students are responsible as well. The students are the most important part of education. Within the three artifacts that I have chosen, the students are the main aspect because they should be the ones who should be motivated to learn. The artifacts are a poster about the drama in the classroom, ABC rule book made by second graders at the beginning of the school year, and student goal setting folders for MAP testing.
Poster
Poster
- The poster was made during a curriculum and instruction class and is called the drama of classroom management. The poster has multiple drawings that help exemplify what classroom management should look for not just teachers and students. The poster includes action steps that can be taken. Classroom rules need to include both procedural and behavioral rules, and it must be unit content specific, and how students may feel when their learning environment is disrupted. This poster is a fun way to show that classroom management is a huge part of the everyday classroom. Without classroom management, success could be lost.
ABC Rule Book
- This book was made for second grade students to understand the school rules, and were given a chance to think of rules and the consequences of their classroom. The students really enjoyed having a choice in what their classroom rules should be and understood the rules because they became more meaningful to the students. It was great to see what some of the students wanted the consequences to be because they were something that they truly loved and it gave meaning to the term consequence. Not only did this help the students, it helped the class become a community.
Goal Setting Folders
- The fourth grade students were given a folder with their first MAP scores in Math, Reading, and Language with a attached section to set goals for the next test at end of the year. Underneath this, was a place for them to tell us exactly what they were going to do to reach this goal. They were able to have an individual meeting with their teachers and talk about what they wanted to do, and how they were going to accomplish their goals. Once they took their test we would have another meeting with them and talk to them about what they scored. This is a great motivation skill for the students individually because they were able to set their own goals and they wanted to achieve their own goals. It is also a great way to communicatewith the students individually and get a sense of who they are and what they are truly capable of.
