Standard One: Knowledge of Subject Matter - The teacher understands the central concepts tools of inquiry, and structures of the content area(s) taught and creates learning experiences that make these aspects of subject matter meaningful for learners.
Standard One Knowledge of Subject matter exemplifies domain one because without a full understanding of the content, your students will not be able to demonstrate their own understanding. A teacher must be able to take information and create a meaningful unit or lesson for the students needs. The artifacts chosen for this standard is the ICLA Test Completion Certificate, Christmas Traditions Around the World Unit, and Elementary Content Knowledge PRAXIS Exam.
ICLA Test Completion Certificate:
ICLA Test Completion Certificate:
- The ICLA was a series of three tests, that truly applied the knowledge that I learned throughout my college years. It shows that I understand and know how to apply different language, structure, and literacy strategies. This demonstrates my knowledge of the students needs, and my own knowledge for modifying my instruction for students. In relation to Domain One of the Danielson Framework, this test made me apply and understand how different methods and strategies are used in a classroom setting that can help create success within the classroom.
Christmas Traditions Around the World Unit
- This was a creative unit for second graders where they had to learn about Christmas traditions around the world and compare them with our own traditions. For this unit, I first needed to understand the traditions around the world, how to pronounce different traditions and why they are important for that specific county. The students were able to have an understanding of each countries traditions, and participated in activities that engaged the students. Being able to understand the material and relate it to the students in a fun, but creative way help with not only student engagement, but their understanding of the material presented throughout the unit.
Elementary Content Knowledge PRAXIS Exam
- This test shows my knowledge in four different areas; science, mathematics, social studies, and reading. I shows my understanding of the material, but also how to apply my understanding in a testing format. To be able to understand material for various grade levels helps me adapt my instruction based on what my students abilities are. This helps me create lessons for students that cause deeper level thinking, problem solving, and engagement within the activities that are based on what the students want to learn the corresponds with the curriculum.
