Having multiple strategies will also give your lessons a creative and fun way for your students to learn. Using various strategies will help all types of learners throughout their educational journey. With the Common Core State Standards, students are to critically think and problem solve with every subject, and using different strategies and giving different tools to help them develop their critical thinking skills using different techniques and methods for every type of learner.
Text Set
Text Set
- The first artifact was used during a first grade aquatic animal unit. I put together this text set for a class and implemented it within the unit. The students were able to use the different types of books, videos, websites, and songs to help them learn more about the unit that we were discussing. The students began to motivate themselves and inquire for more information within the unit. The students seemed to yearn for more information and were able to use the text set to gather the own information and guide their own learning.
Fact Disc
- The fact disc is a great way for students to show their own understanding of a topic. With this, I used this disc for fourth grade. They had to divide their plate into four different sections based off of their TREE writing model. (Topic, Reasons, Explain, End it) They would first read the section of the book then close it. Once they had closed their book, I would give them their fact disc that they would divide into four sections. They would determine what their own topic of the section was and explain it without using their book. They have to recall the information that they read and write what they thought down. Once they had this done, they would write a five paragraph essay while using their fact disc. This helped the students organize their thoughts, avoid plagiarism, and help them read carefully and understand the important concepts of the text.
Character Bag
- A character bag was done for the book "The Bridge to Teribithia." The students choose a character and determine what characteristics represent his or her outer personality and what characteristics represented his inner personality. This created a deeper understanding of the characters in a book. The students had to dissect the book in a different way to fully understand different aspects of the book. The students had to immerse themselves within the reading and truly were given a chance to think critically about the books true meaning.
